Why Plant Growth Regulators are Necessary?
Every country’s growth is directly proportional to their healthy crop production. Each year the crop demand increases due to many factors and the agricultural sector ensure to meet the rise in demand adequately. Crop protection is the science of managing plant diseases, weeds and other pests. Farmers face several challenges in producing sufficient crops to meet massive consumer demand. While doing this, they have to take immense care to maintain the quality and quantity of resources for future generations.
Since years, new technologies have enabled the agricultural industry to adapt the demand for higher productivity. In today’s time as well, agriculture innovation continues to support growers in their efforts to produce higher yields in a more profitable and sustainable manner.

Crop Protection
Crop protection against various pests is a necessary measure in the agricultural sector. Pest is generally used and sprayed for insects and organism, which causes economic damage to the plants. In pest management, spraying of chemical pesticides is judiciously and sensibly handled to protect the crop and its production. The basic requirements for any plant to grow are more of natural resources like light, water, oxygen, minerals and nutrients. Apart from these external requirements, plants also depend on organic compounds to regulate and control the growth of the plants. These organic compounds are collectively known as plant growth regulators.
Plant Growth Regulators
Chemical substances influencing the growth and differentiation of plant cells are known as plant growth regulators. They are chemical messengers that facilitate intracellular communication. These are also known as plant hormones. They are either produced naturally within the plants or in laboratories. They are produced to manage the growth, development and movement of plants. Plant growth regulators are broadly classified into 5 groups, which alter plants in different ways depending on which group they belong to.
- Auxins: It promotes cell elongation and affects rooting processes, tropic responses, and bud development.
- Cytokinins: It controls the development of a plant’s shape.
- Gibberellins: It mainly functions to promote stem elongation and stimulate flowering, though they affect other processes like root growth also.
- Abscisic Acid: It regulates seed germination.
- Ethylene: It affects the development of root and is widely used for commercial purposes, specifically to speed up fruit ripening.
